On Friday,20th of October 2000 we, one of the English groups of the 4 A went out to do some field work to examine how the newly built banks, shops, and post office near the school were built to make life easier for wheelchair users.
Here are some of the things we found out :
In Viktring :
Viktring is suitable for wheelchair users. Only a few
pavements are too high, and some ramps need to be built.
( Sabsi ) The post office has got a wide entrance with an automatic door. You can turn
around ( enough place ), but the telephone and the safe deposit boxes are too high. (
Merci ) The telephone boxes are too high. ( Ines St. ) All the public buildings that I
visited can be used with a wheelchair. But some ramps need to be built, in one of the
banks, for example. In there, if you wanted to get to the customer service, you would not
be able to get there. ( Nino ). There are stairs and no ramp. ( Herbert ) The advice box,
money depo table and the money letter box are too high for wheelchair users. ( Gunther ).
In another bank, it is difficult to open the doors because the pavement is too high. (
Elli )
Entrances to shops are wide enough . ( Herbert ) One of the shops has a ramp and automatic
doors, so it is easy to get in, ... the freezer and the vegetable freezer are a bit too
high, you are not able to get all the things in it.
( Elli ) . The automatic doors are good for wheelchair users and the shelves are not too
high. (Klaus) One of the shops I looked at is accessible for wheelchair users, but the
corridors are too narrow and the shelves are too high.( Isi )
In the pub there are no automatic doors but at the entrance there are no stairs. The door
in the mens toilet is too small. ( Gersin, July, Klaus ). The toilets for women are
quite good. ( Gersin )
At the weekend we looked at the areas where we lived and these are some of the things we wrote about in our homework:
This is us looking at each others homework
Our supermarket is very good for wheelchair users. The
coffee machine is too high but all the other things are OK. ... The second tavern I looked
at is very good for wheelchair users because there are no stairs and there is a ramp in
the toilet. ( Klaus )
Velden is suitable for wheelchair users. ... But many doors need to be widened, lifts need
to be installed and some ramps need to be built before wheelchair users can get in on
their own. ( Anna )
There is a bank in Welzenegg : Its easy to get in because there are ramps and
automatic doors. The desks and the bankomat are a bit too high. ... It is a bit more
difficult to get into the post office. There are still automatic doors but there is a very
high step. ( Elli )
In the school near my home it is possible to get in because there are no stairs. But it is
impossible to get to the first floor or to the sports hall, because there are only stairs.
At a ( Tabak ) the cash desk and most shelves are low enough for a wheelchair user but
some shelves are too high. ( Gunther )
In my "kaff" its difficult to live if you are a wheelchair user. We have
not many restaurants but there are always stairs and no ramps. ( Ines )
Keutschach is not suitable for wheelchair users, because all the entrances to the
restaurants ( I saw ) are too small. ... In the Spar supermarket there is the entrance
automatic, but indoors there is a turnstile and you cant get through in a
wheelchair. ( Nino )
In Klagenfurt it is easy to get into the post office because there is a ramp. There are
lifts at most shops. At some shops it is impossible to get into because there are doors
that are too narrow. ( Merci )
Our Konservatorium is very suitable for wheelchair users. There are many ramps and lifts
in it. ( Herbert )
In my village the school is also not good. The doors open to the outside and there are a
lot of stairs out of the school and in the school. There is no ramp. ( Ines )
